Alverno College recommends that all weekday college students entering the college within one year of high school graduation, 17-20 years old, to live on campus for the first two semesters. Alverno offers suites (single with a bathroom), large singles, small singles and doubles in both Austin hall and Clare hall. Austin hall is the heart of the residence life program and offers lots of activities and community, whereas Clare hall is a quieter environment designed for upper class students wishing to focus more on their studies. All first-year residents are housed in Austin hall. New, first-year students to the residence hall are housed in double rooms. Sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students are eligible to reside in large and small single rooms if they are available. During the academic year, the room becomes a “home away from home.” It wants the students to be as comfortable as possible. Each double room is furnished with blinds, two single beds, built-in desk and drawers, desk chairs, a built-in bookshelf, closets, a sink and vanity, a microwave/refrigerator unit, a telephone jack (students provide their own phone), a computer network/internet connection jack, and a cable television outlet. A vacuum cleaner, mop and cooking utensils are available for use at the Austin hall reception desk. A quieter housing option is provided in Clare hall to upper-class and nontraditional age students who prefer more privacy. Sophomores, juniors, seniors and students over the age of 22 are eligible to live in Clare hall if they have lived on campus for one academic year, are free of an outstanding business office balance, and are in good standing within the residence hall. Living in Clare hall is a privilege for those students who want the convenience of living on campus, with the freedom of independent living.
