Course description:
The M.A.T. secondary biology program equips individuals to teach not only scientific principles; it enables them to convey an understanding of science’s impact on history, modern civilization and daily life. To achieve that, the program features a combination of courses in secondary sciences, curriculum development and learning theory. This biology program also provides a unique educational resource located just minutes from campus: the Fernbank Science Center, part of Atlanta’s DeKalb County School System. The center, which features a 65-acre woodland forest and a facility hosting life and physical sciences installations, is the only one of its kind affiliated with a public school system. The Fernbank Museum of Natural History, a science center educational partner, is also located nearby. In addition to internships with Fernbank’s superb science faculty, field experiences include lab assignments and supervised teaching at area high schools.
Entry requirements:
The M.A.T. Admissions Committee evaluates each applicant individually and holistically, taking into account the applicant's statement of purpose, writing samples, academic record, letters of recommendation, and test scores. In addition to a bachelor of arts degree or significant preparation in the discipline, and a passing score on the GACE Basic Skills Test or a state-approved exemption, applicants should achieve the following benchmarks: An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a GPA of 3.0 in the major, and an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0. The degree must be complete at the time of admission. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores above the 50th percentile in one of the three areas. A completed major in biology, or a related discipline, that incorporates some of the coursework. A particular course may meet more than one requirement. To accommodate deficiencies, the M.A.T. program also includes two opportunities to take an undergraduate elective course.
